MahaMetro wants to clear hawkers

PUNE: The MahaMetro has requested the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to clear obstacles near Swargate for speeding up the Metro work.

In Swargate area, licenced hawkers and PMC’s building, which has been given to a self-help group to run a restaurant, are creating problems in the Metro work.

While speaking to the media, Saurabh Rao, Municipal Commissioner, said, “In a recent meeting, MahaMetro officials requested us to remove stalls and other construction nearby the flyover to speed up the Metro work at Swargate. We have conducted a survey and found out that there are authorised as well as unauthorised hawkers and a building of the PMC which Mahametro wants to remove.”

Madhav Jagtap, head of Anti Encroachment Department of PMC said, “There are around 100 hawkers near Swargate flyover where Metro work has started. In a fortnight, we will remove all hawkers and PMC’s structure. Authorised hawkers will be rehabilitated nearby.”

Atul Gadgil, Executive Director of Pune Metro Project said, “We have started work on the Swargate underground station and hub. We have requested the civic body to remove hawkers and other structures.”

Pune Metro is going to construct a multi-modal hub that will house multi-level parking along with metro station as Jedhe Chowk is a busy place for PMPML and state transport buses.

Land for realignment of Vanaz - Ramwadi metro route

PMC and MahaMetro officials visited the Vanaz-Ramwadi realignment route along Mula-Mutha river. MahaMetro had started the Vanaz-Ramwadi route work on September 29, 2017 but the section lies within the prohibited area of the Aga Khan Palace. As per the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, no construction is allowed within 100 metres of a nationally protected monument like Aga Khan Palace.

Accordingly, MahaMetro was then working on three options for realignment - Kalyani Nagar to Ramwadi, Gunjan Chowk to Ramwadi and Bund Garden along with Mula-Mutha river to Ramwadi. MahaMetro, PMC and district administration held three meetings to discuss the issue and finalised Gunjan Chowk to Shivane-Kharadi Road along Mula-Mutha river. Rao said, “The PMC has already started Shivane-Kharadi riverside road. On the same road, MahaMetro wants to realign Metro route. They want land from the civic body to realign the route.”

Pune Metro has estimated that it will need additional Rs 200 crore for realignment of the route.
