Locals push traffic police for installation of rumble strips

Pune: In a bid to curb cases of speeding and rash driving, local residents want rumble strips installed in their society and on inner roads. The traffic police has been receiving an average of 3-4 applications a day from residents of different areas for installation of rumble strips.

“Locals want rumble strips to curb speeding and rash driving. Residents, most of whom are senior citizens, have been sending us 3-4 applications a day. Before a decision, we examine if they are necessary at that spot,”  said said Vivekanand Wakhare, Inspector, Planning, Traffic Police.

“Most of the areas require them because two-wheeler drivers are riding at high speeds - more than 60 kmph - on the inner roads,” he added.

Rumble strips are a variation of speed breakers in which one  rumble strip has several bumps that are low and spread across a certain length of the road at short and regular intervals. Traffic officials said rumble strips are a better alternative to speed breakers as they can stretch for metres, doing the job of slowing down vehicles without causing road accidents. “During night time, drivers often fail to see speed breakers on roads, which leads to
accidents,” Wakhare added.
