PUNE: A live hand grenade was found at an under construction PMC garden on NIBM-Undri Road in Kondhwa on Thursday. The grenade was discovered in the garden next to Konark Indrayu, a residential society.

It is less than a kilometre from a popular mall.

The grenade was discovered by locals in a mound of mud dumped inside the garden. The discovery created panic in the area and locals reported the matter to the police. A cordon was thrown around the area, after which the Bomb Squad was called to safely remove the grenade.

Milind Gaikwad, Police Inspector at Kondhwa police station, said, “It was a live hand grenade and it was recovered from a garden located in residential area. It is quite an unusual event. Prima facie, it seems that it came along with the mound of mud. We are yet to ascertain whether it’s an Army hand grenade or not. We have to gather details on its make in order to come to any conclusion.”

Safety measures have been adopted by the police to secure the grenade. The police said that they are going to dig a hole in the premises of the police station and will place the three pin intact grenade inside it.
