Pune: Activists have claimed that lack of technically skilled manpower has caused degradation of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses.
PMPML Pravasi Manch had organised a discussion on ‘Midi buses but with rising problems’ and digital administration on Saturday. PMPML Chief Engineer Shivaji Jadhav, PMPML IT head Shirish Kalekar, forum chairman Jugal Rathi, Satish Chitale and Adv Sheela Paralikar were also present.
The discussion between PMPML officials and passengers led to the topic of hiring skilled manpower based on merit, which would improve the condition of buses.
One of the activists said, “When contractors went on strike last year, PMPML got back their own 200 buses from them. Out of these, 100 were sent to Pimpri Chinchwad and the remaining to Kothrud bus depot. But these depots did not have space to retain these buses. The administration is facing multiple problems with these buses till date. The manpower available with PMPML to work on these buses, which run on CNG, is less, which includes those who have the right technical knowledge of Midi Buses.”
Shivaji Jadhav said, “For good buses to be on the road, we need to have skilled manpower, which needs hiring of staff in PMPML to be based on merit. Quality officials and manpower move to other jobs due to lesser salaries in PMPML, which needs to be rectified.”
Rathi said, “The work, which is outsourced to various organisations outside PMPML, must be completed in the provided timeline, else there needs to be a strict penalty imposed.”
“The transport utility has 200 midi buses in its fleet, out of which some are facing technical problems. Along with PMPML, there are other organisations involved in working with the Midi buses. By coordination between all these organisations, we will resolve issues like displays, lights, speakers, mikes, boards, GPS, etc,” said PMPML’s IT head Shirish Kalekar.
In case of repetitive issues, the contracts of these contractors need to be cancelled immediately. The digital bus facility is changing the view of PMP but the facilitation is still not up to the mark, which needs to be taken care of on immediate basis and we will decide the direction of our movement based on this decision. The forum has urged the citizenry to join the passenger forum movement by calling on 9850958189 and 9422017156.
