Kopardi victim’s memorial covered
Don’t politicise the issue: Victim’s mother
“To keep my daughter’s memory alive, we wanted to install her statue in the village. I appeal to people to avoid politicising the issue,” said the victim’s mother. She said the family decided to install her daughter’s statue at a place owned by the family. She said, “After my daughter’s death, the Maratha community across the State came together. That is why we wanted a memorial in her memory.” She added they did not want to glorify the objectionable issues regarding this case.
Kopardi: A memorial consisting of a statue raised in the memory of the 14-year-old girl from Kopardi village in Ahmednagar district, who was allegedly raped and murdered by three suspects, was covered with a cloth on Friday after locals and Sambhaji Brigade opposed the move to unveil it.
The incident had happened on July 13 last year. People from across the state paid tribute to the girl to mark one year of the incident. The memorial has been built by the Suryoday Sanstha run by spiritual guru Bhaiyyu Maharaj.
On Thursday, volunteers of the Sanstha and relatives of the victim decided to unveil the statue to mark the day. Accordingly, her mother unveiled the statue. However, locals opposed this move. Senior leader Lalasaheb Sudrik discussed the issue with the family members. They then covered the statue with a cloth.
Sudrik said the locals are against creating the memorial. However, he warned against politicising the issue. He said relatives and the villagers will unanimously decide on this issue.
