Kolhatkar’s caretaker detained in wife’s murder

The police told Sakal Times that Asha, who was watching TV in her room, witnessed smoke billowing from the kitchen. Unable to comprehend the reason for the smoke, she seeked neighbour’s help. 

PUNE: Alankar police have detained the caretaker of theatre personality Dilip Kolhatkar on the suspicion of murdering the wife of the noted artist.

65-year-old Deepali Kolhatkar was found dead in a half-burnt state at the couple’s residence near Mehendale Garage in the city’s upmarket Kothrud area on Thursday night at around 8 pm. Following the incident, a case of murder was lodged against an unidentified person at Alankar police station. 

According to police, Dilip has been bedridden from past three years and the family had engaged two male caretakers in two shifts to take care of him. Apart from the couple, the deceased’s mother Asha Sahasrabuddhe (85) used to live with them. The police told Sakal Times that Asha, who was watching TV in her room, witnessed smoke billowing from the kitchen. Unable to comprehend the reason for the smoke, she seeked neighbour’s help. 

Basavraj Teli, DCP (Zone-1), Pune Police, said, “We have detained the new caretaker, who came as a replacement after the previous caretaker went on leave. He is from Usmanabad.” “We are questioning him and will reach to a conclusion soon,” said Teli.

It is significant to note that initially the police thought that Dipali’s death was an accident. However, a case of murder was registered after post-mortem reports showed that she had sustained head injury and was strangulated.
