Keep gadgets away for good sleep

Pune: According to a recent survey, 53 per cent people from Pune said watching shows on electronic gadgets kept them awake late at night whereas 32 per cent check their social media feed late at night.
The survey conducted by Centuary Mattresses included 10 cities from across the country with people from different walks of life. The sample size of the survey was 1,524, wherein 160 people participated from Pune.

The survey highlighted that 10 per cent people feel sleepy every day during the way to work or way back from work. Moreover, 21 per cent feel sleepy at least four to five days a week and 37 per cent people responded that they feel sleepy at least three days in a week.

Emphasising the importance of good sleep for a healthy lifestyle, Dr Mohammed Azhar Kotwal, a general physician from DocOnline, an online doctor consultation platform, said a lot of people complain of stress, coupled with lack of sleep.

It is important that an adult gets an average sleep of at least 7 to 9 hours each day.

“It is not just the number of hours but also the quality of sleep that matters. And sound sleep results into a rejuvenated day. The corporate life is glitzy from the outside; however, unregulated lifestyle could result in unrepairable damage to health. Hence, it is important to understand the importance of work-life balance and the need for quality sleep,” said Kotwal.

Speaking on the issue, Uttam Malani, Executive Director, Centuary Mattresses, said, “Gradually each one of us is impacted by the new age lifestyle, which is depriving us of quality sleep. In our survey, it is revealed very clearly that having the right mattress is essential to unlocking ‘the power of better sleep’, in addition to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Also, it is important that the mattresses we use must be free from allergens such as mites, bed bugs, microbes etc. Since the hygiene level of the mattress is also very important in facilitating good sleep.”

For a good night’s sleep

  • Maintain a sleep routine: It helps in better and faster metabolism, proper sleep and the effective functioning of body and mind. The body has an internal clock. So, it is best to tune to the body clock with the natural day and night cycle.
  • Sleep-friendly environment: Create a sleep-friendly environment by ensuring cool temperatures, eliminate noise distractions by listening to soothing sounds. These help to induce good sleep.
  • Have light dinner: At night, the body metabolism is slow. As a result, light dinner and less water intake will help to avoid frequent urination that can affect sleep.
  • Disconnect from all electronic device: Switch off mobile phones and electronic devices.
