Pune: “The best thing about old education societies like Shikshan Prasarak Mandali (SPM), Deccan Education Society (DES) in the city is that these institutes have not lost their objective of giving equal educational opportunity to all. They have successfully saved themselves from commercialisation of education and continue to impart values,” said Nitin Karmalkar, Vice Chancellor, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).
He was speaking on the occasion of Foundation Day of SPM Public School, when construction of the new building of the school began.
SPM Public School is shifting from the Maharashtra SSC Board pattern to that of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Hence, construction of a new building adhering to the norms of CBSE was started on the premises of SPM on Monday.
Chief Guest Guardian Minister Girish Bapat said, “Whenever I travel to any place across Maharashtra, I get requests from people to help get their children admitted to SP College, such is the popularity of this prestigious institute. The management of the institute has a great part to play in this.”
He said playgrounds for children are vanishing from the city’s heart. “Along with the classroom education, playing is vital for a child’s development. I am happy that the institute has reserved land for a playground, not compromising with the children’s right to play,” Bapat said.
Sohanlal Jain, Chairman, Shikshan Prasarak Mandali, said the school will be built within a year.
With a capacity of 2,080 students, for classes from Nursery to Std X, the school will stretch over an area of 1 lakh square feet. The school will have parking lots and solar panels.
MLC Madhuri Misal, Shrikrishna Chitale of SPM, Dr Aparna Morris, Principal of CBSE SPM Public School, were amongst those present.
