Job creation a big task in age of automation: Nandan Nilekani
There is a rise in AI, which will create a lot of impact on jobs and it is a matter of debate across the globe. In a country like India, which is going to have a huge young population in decades to come, it is very important to create jobs.

PUNE: The 23rd HK Firodia Awards function was held at Balgandharv Rangmandir on Friday. Prof Sandip Trivedi, a physicist and Director of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, was awarded the Vijnan Ratna. HK Firodia Vijnan Bhushan Award was given to Prof Satyajit Mayor, renowned biologist and Director of National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru.
Nandan Nilekani, Co-founder and Non-Executive Chairman of Infosys and former chairman of UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), the chief guest of the function, was felicitated with HK Firodia Lifetime Achievement Award. “There is a rise in Artificial Intelligence (AI), which will create a lot of impact on jobs and it is a matter of debate across the globe. In a country like India, which is going to have a huge young population in decades to come, it is very important to create jobs. But this can be a task in the age of automation,” Nilekani said.
“In India, we have to grow through an internal market and domestic activities. Small companies and manufacturers can play an important role in growing and creating employment in future. It is very important to encourage small businesses, as they will play an important role in strengthening the nation,” he added.
Arun Firodia, Chairman, Kinetic Group, said, “I take this opportunity to salute the entire scientific community for working towards the welfare of the people. It is high time we build a scientific eco-system.”
Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, who has been associated with this award since its inception, said, “I am dangerously optimistic because of the young Indians, as we have the spirit to achieve great things.”
Dr KS Sancheti, Chairman of Sakal Media Group Pratap Pawar, Govind Swarup and Deepak Shikarpur were also present for the awards function.
