Jewellery weighing 40 kg in gold for Dagdusheth Ganpati for Ganeshotsav

PUNE: City-based PNG Jewellers has designed stunning pieces of jewellery for Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati this year for Ganeshotsav to commemorate the 125 years of ‘Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Sarvajnik Ganpati Mandal Trust’. PNG Jewellers has been associated with the mandal for around three decades now.

Over five months, around 40 craftsmen of PNG Jewellers made the jewellery in gold provided by the Dagdusheth Halwai Mandal.

“The mandal wished to make jewellery for the Lord from the gold donated to the temple by devotees. We made the ornaments from around 40 kg of donated gold, without charging any labour cost. This is our worship to Bappa,” said Saurabh Gadgil, CMD, PNG Jewellers.

The jewellery is different from what the idol wore earlier. The designs are studded with over 60,000 precious stones such as rubies and emeralds, collected from various parts of the country.

Intricate traditional craftsmanship like filigree work and nakashi have been used to create these marvels. According to Gadgil, the jewellery costs around Rs 15 crore.

Seven crowns have been created for the Ganpati idol to be used during the festival. The ornaments include meticulously handcrafted Ganesh mukut (crowns), seven changeable zali (front part of mukut) and seven changeable prabhaval (net around the mukut), uparane, angarkha, pitambar, kaan (ears), shundabhushan and a necklace.

These pieces derive inspiration from traditional symbols such as lotus, kalash, elephant, kirtimukh, peacock and trident and are carved using gold, emeralds, rubies and white diamonds.

“Making of the jewellery was a tedious process. We had to make PoP models of the jewellery, then mould gold into it. Sometimes, if the size wasn’t correct, we needed to remodel the ornament. We remade the mukat thrice. We made a video of the making of the jewellery and we will upload it on YouTube,” Gadgil said.

PEOPLE BUY JEWELLERY FOR IDOLS
People are thronging jewellery shops to buy gold and silver ornaments for Ganesh idols. “Many households that have traditional jewellery make it a point to buy a new ornament every year. As eco-friendly Ganesh is trending these days, many people also prefer buying Ganesh idols made of gold or silver. People also demand ornaments they have seen on the Ganesh idols in different mandals. It’s a trend to buy items for gifting others during the festival,” Saurabh Gadgil said.
