Pune: A 21-year-old employee of Ranka Jewellers has been arrested by Pune police for conspiring to steal ornaments worth Rs 1.47 crore of the company by cooking up a story of a robbery.
The accused has been identified as Ajay Hogade, a resident of Sion-Koliwada in Mumbai. Hogade was employed at the Kalbadevi branch of Ranka Jewellers in Mumbai and was working there for last three months.
Hogade conspired to loot the ornaments of Ranka Jewellers to settle the burden of a loan of Rs 12 lakh on his family. On July 26, Hogade who used to work as an office boy was sent to Pune to deliver the gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 1.47 crore to the main branch of Ranka Jewellers in Pune. He got down at the platform number 6 of Pune station and alleged that he was robbed by four suspects who attacked him with knives and made away with the sack of ornaments. He approached the Bund Garden police and registered a complaint of robbery. However it was discovered that he cooked up the whole story to steal the money, said Pankaj Dahane, DCP, Crime, Pune.
Dahane said, “While investigating the case, we realised that the scars of attack on the stomach and back of Hogade seemed self-inflicted. On probing deeper, we came to know that the financial condition of his family was not well and his family was under a debt of Rs 12 lakh. He admitted his guilt during the further enquiry.” Hogade conspired with the help of his brother Sharad, father Maruti and friend Annu Kumar. After getting down at Pune, he handed over the sack to his brother and friend who then took it Mumbai and delivered it to his father.
