Pune: Jet Airways officials did not permit a girl to board a Delhi-bound flight as it was overbooked on Friday morning. Later, she took another flight to reach Delhi in the afternoon.

Swarn Jayanti (18), a BA first year student of Abeda Inamdar College, faced severe inconvenience due to this. She had booked a ticket for herself on April 21 to travel in Jet Airways flight (9W 366) from Pune to Delhi. The flight was to depart at 11.50 am. Swarn reached the counter at 9.45 am.

“There were two passengers before her and 15 passengers after her. Her ticket was checked but the booking staff told her that the flight is overbooked and she has to take a flight of some other airline. She said she was alone and being a girl she should be given priority and some male passenger be withdrawn,” said the girl’s father Dr DN Yadav, CEO of Pune Cantonment Board.

He said, “The Jet Airways personnel did not give any heed to her request. So she arranged a ticket by Go Air and boarded it as she had an urgent academic work in Delhi at 2.30 pm on Friday. It is learnt that Jet Airways sold tickets at higher rates on last 2-3 days and it is a condemnable example of explanation and theory of maximum profit.”

“Such misbehaviour and inhumane approach and attitude will be reported to all concerned authorities along with National Women Commission and Human Rights Commission for harassing a girl and giving male passengers priority over a college girl,” Dr Yadav said.

According to sources at Pune airport, the airline staffer has given a compensatory ticket of Go Air airline to the girl.
Regarding this issue Jet Airways spokesperson said, “ Jet Airways flight 9W 366 from Pune to Delhi, of this morning was marginally over booked. A few guests travelling on the flight could unfortunately not be accommodated, on account of this overbooking. Overbooking of flights is an industry practice done in anticipation of last minute booking cancellations.”

“The affected guests were offered alternate flight arrangements to travel to their destinations. Compensation as per DGCA guidelines were offered where applicable. Jet Airways regrets the inconvenience caused,” said a Jet Airways spokesperson.
