Pune: The Khadakwalsa division of the irrigation department has put the blame on the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for not giving it substantial time to repair  Mutha canal leakage spots while the civic body says that it is duty of the irrigation department and “We are always ready to help them.”

PB Shelar, Executive Engineer of Khadakwasla irrigation division, told Sakal Times, “The irrigation department built the canal in 1965. Since that day, we haven’t got time to undertake any major repair work as the civic body is lifting water from the canal for drinking purpose. Hence, we could not stop water supply and carry out repair work.”

Shelar further said, “We did a small repair work of the canal. But, now time has come to do a major repair work after this incident. Everyone is blaming the irrigation department but they don’t understand our problems.”

He further said, “Whenever we demand closure of the canal, they raise issue of supply of drinking water. Now, we have found eight major spots where there is a need of major repair work. We need at least one month to carry out repair work.”

Shelar added, “We decreased the water level in the canal and started repair work. However, the civic body released more water with the help of their pumps in the canal and the water level increased. Hence, we have not been able to finish repair work yet. Cement concrete needs time to set and if we don’t give time to set, it will not sustain water pressure and will be washed away. We have informed civic officials but they are not in a mood to listen.”

While on the other side, PMC officials said, “It is the work of the irrigation department to carry out repairs. We are always ready to help them.”

He further said, “However, we cannot allow them to stop supply of canal water for a long duration as it affects eastern part of the city. Now, we have just finishing our closed pipeline work from Parvati to Pune Cantonment. After this, we will not lift water from the canal. Till date, the irrigation department will have to cooperate with us.  The official further said, “We have completed closed pipeline work from Khadakwasla to Parvati water treatment plant. But the irrigation department hasn’t undertaken any repair work since last one year in this stretch. Many corporators have told us that major repairs are needed in this stretch.”
