IPS like in-service training for cops takes off

PUNE: For the first time, in-service training for constables and police inspectors has been started on the lines of that for IPS officers, to keep pace with changing times. The Centre for Police Research (CPR), Pune, will be made satellite centre of Maharashtra Police Academy (MPA), Nashik, for imparting training and doing research on police subjects, said DGP Subodh Kumar Jaiswal on Monday, while inaugurating the auditorium at CPR.

The Maharashtra Police chief said, “After basic training, there was no further training. Now, there will be training during promotions to next ranks for constables, PSI, API and inspectors, who are promoted to DySP rank. The police should keep pace with changing times, hence training is required.”

He appealed to people and police personnel to do research on subjects related to the police. “The research will help in dealing with cases and the public in a better way. With changing social dimensions, police personnel must know how to behave with the public,” he said.

Pune City Police Commissioner Dr K Venkatesham, CID Chief Atulchandra Kulkarni, Director Police Wireless Retesh Kumaarr, Prison Department Head Sunil Ramanand and other senior officers were present on the occasion.

One batch of police personnel has already undergone training at the Police Training School (PTS) in Khandala, while another batch of assistant police inspectors to police inspector rank officers are undergoing training at the CPR. “The in-service training will give a fresh perspective to cops. They can also bring their family members here for a few days and spend time with them. The CPR will be made satellite centre of the MPA, Nashik, for imparting training,” Jaiswal said.

The CPR, the one-of-its kind institute in the country, was set up in 1992, to conduct and promote in-depth studies and fundamental and applied research pertaining to police and related social as well as behavioral issues and to provide research facilities to serving and retired police officers/other scholars in these fields.
