Pune: Doctors from the city have warned against rise in winter allergies and advised special protection for infants and expectant mothers. Being in the top five most polluted cities of the country, the toxic air in Pune causes allergies, fibrosis, bacterial and fungal infections. Winter allergies are different from seasonal cold and cough but most people lack awareness about triggering factors and symptoms, especially during pregnancy.
Speaking to Sakal Times, Dr Somnath Salgar from Sasson General Hospital said that pregnant women, infants and senior citizens are at greater risk of catching the infection.
“During winter, these problems are faced by those who have less immunity. Infants, senior citizens and pregnant women are more prone to infection and hence, the precautions are a must. it should be made sure that proper protection from cold is taken,” said Salgar.
Winter allergies pose a multi-pronged attack on the body, giving rise to flu, persistent cold, wheezing, asthma and many more health ailments. With the peaking of winters, it is that time of the year where complaints like dry skin, cough and cold, sour throat become common.
However, newborns and pregnant women are most vulnerable to the threat of winter and elicit the need to take extra precaution and care. With children, especially, newborn babies, who have under-developed immune systems the threat of winter allergies is graver and elicit the need to be take extra precaution and care.
While discussing the health of new borns in this season, Dr Mahesh Lakhe, Consultant - Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Columbia Asia Hospital said that during the cold season, the resistance and immunity levels are low, while in newborn babies it is still developing.
“Common triggers of allergies are mould, house dust mites, animal dander and perfumes. Besides, pet dander, smoke, gas fumes, dust mites, winter cold can make your nose watery and eyes itchy. Therefore, be attentive towards the newborn to note if the cold and sneezing is triggered by any of these factors. It should also be noted that while seasonal cough and cold are temporary, allergies are life-long and can be hereditary as well,” said Lakhe.
