IMD celebrates Science Day

PUNE: India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, celebrated ‘National Science Day’ on Thursday. The department had an open day on Thursday in the city, where students from various schools and colleges visited the centre and officials from the Met Department showed them how various activities are carried out.

Speaking to Sakal Times, AK Srivastava, Head of Climate Research Division, IMD Pune, said that this year, the theme was science for people, people for science. “Students and junior scientists were introduced about the work done at the important department and how it is is an essential part of the system. The importance of various research and studies was also highlighted. The mechanisms, that the meteorologists use in day to day forecast, were introduced to the young minds,” said Srivastava.

He further added that in the coming years, many more ongoing projects will be shared with the younger generations. A documentary on Antarctica was also showcased during the open day. Speaking about it, Sharad Gursale, a research assistant at IMD Pune, said that the documentary talks about the research done in Antarctica.

“The Indian government is doing a lot of research there and as a part of it, Indian scientists are given an opportunity to visit the island. We take air samples as the air there is very pristine. It is a very different experience for everyone who visits there,” said Gursale.
