Imbibe courage to ask questions: Acharyulu

Pune: Professor Dr Madabhushnam Sridhar Acharyulu, Information Commissioner at Central Information Commission in New Delhi, deliberated upon various provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2005, and its co-existence with the Official Secrets Act, at a lecture organised by the Department of Law, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

The Department of Law had organised the ‘Late GR Gandhi Endowment Lecture’ on the topic of ‘media, educational institutions and Right to Information’. The programme began with the launch of the book ‘Privacy as Secrecy’ authored by Acharyulu himself, which was released at the hands of Vice-Chancellor of SPPU Prof Dr Nitin Karmalkar. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr NS Umrani was also present on the occasion.

Acharyulu, in his speech, explained the relevance of the title of the lecture and explained the nexus thereto. He also guided the students by giving apt examples, illustrations and landmark case laws in the realm of Right To Information (RTI). 

At the end of his speech, he advised the students ‘to imbibe the courage of questioning and to obtain accurate and true answers thereto.’ He also encouraged the students to be vibrant citizens, being part of the fifth estate of the State, which is the civil society.

Professor Dr A Lakshminath, the Former Vice-Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University, Patna, was present as the chief guest of the programme.

In her welcome address, Professor Dr Durgambini Patel, Head of Department of Law, explained to the students the various perspectives of RTI and also recalled the work of late GR Gandhi. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr Vijay Khare, Dean of Faculty of Humanities, SPPU.

Professor Dr A Lakshminath, in his presidential address, critically analysed various issues and nuances of the privacy and media. The lecture was followed with a brief question-answer session wherein Acharyulu enlightened the students.
