IMA to protest against violence on doctors on Friday

Pune: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) with all its branches, had condemned the violence perpetrated on an innocent and budding young doctor in West Bengal. The entire medical fraternity expressed solidarity with the residents in NRS Medical College, Kolkata, who are on a strike.

The IMA has decided to observe a nationwide protest day on Friday (June 14).

All 3.5 lakh IMA members across India will provide the medical services to their patients but with a black ribbon as the protest in opposition to this harsh occurrence.

In an official statement, IMA Maharashtra President Dr Hozie Kapadia said that in past few years, there has been violence against doctors and hospitals in many states.

“Not a single day passes without an incidence of violence against the doctors, hospitals, nurses and other healthcare workers. The brutal attacks take place not only in private hospitals but in government and charitable hospitals also. The gruesome incident that happened on June 11 at NRS Medical College in Kolkata is of barbaric nature. Dr Paribaha Mukhopadhyay, an intern doctor on duty, was brutally attacked by the family of a patient. Dr Mukhopadhyay sustained a fracture in the skull and other critical injuries all over the body,” said Kapadia. IMA Maharashtra and Pune branch have condemned the violence perpetrated on an innocent and budding young doctor.

They have been demanding for implementation of the law passed in 2010 that is against ‘violence against the doctors and other healthcare providers’.

The promise to provide adequate and constant security for the doctors and residents in government hospitals and private medical institutes, given by the State Government in 2016, has never been fulfilled.

“We have also been insisting to the Centre since 2016 to pass a national law for the security of the medical fraternity against such violent behaviour. All 206 branches of IMA Maharashtra are going to send the protest letters and emails to the prime minister of India and to all  Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) and Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) as well,” said IMA Pune President Dr Sanjay Patil.

IMA has strongly condemned the ghastly attack on the doctor by a violent mob in Kolkata and demands immediate action at every level by the State and Central government.

Agitation
Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), Central Intern Association and undergraduate students of government colleges in the State will be on mass bunk from 8 am to 5 pm on Friday (June 14). However, all emergencies and critical care services will be active.
