IITM and SPPU sign MoU for R&D in atmospheric and environmental science

Pune: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for five years for research and development (R&D) in atmospheric science and environmental science.

Pune: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for five years for research and development (R&D) in atmospheric science and environmental science.

The MoU was signed by Prafulla Pawar, Dean of Faculty and Additional Registrar of SPPU and Ravi Nanjundiah, Director of IITM, in the presence of Nitin Karmalkar, Vice Chancellor of SPPU, SW Gosavi, Head of Department of Physics and Environmental Science, SPPU, P Pradeep Kumar, Head of Department of Atmospheric and Space Science, SPPU, R Krishnan, Executive Director of CCCR-IIITM and P Mukhopadhyay, Academic Cell Coordinator of IITM.

Under the programme, candidates from IITM will be eligible for MPhil and PhD programmes provided by the Department of Environmental Science at SPPU. "The basic concept and objective of this collaboration is to exploit the scientific expertise of IITM in human resource development for training manpower in the area of atmospheric sciences and environmental sciences at the postgraduate level, leading to the degree of MTech (Atmospheric Science) and MSc (Atmospheric Science), which will be offered by the university," said officials.

This MoU will also facilitate IITM and SPPU. It will boost interaction between scientists of IITM and the university. Students sponsored by IITM have to satisfy eligibility criteria set for the course by the university. IITM will assist the university in providing infrastructure for teaching, laboratory and general administration. Besides, hostel facilities to regular students of the MSc or MTech courses will be provided on payment of nominal fees. Library, computer and laboratory facilities will be provided to students selected to carry out internship training and projects at IITM.

Scientists from IITM will be designated as adjunct assistant professors/ adjunct associate professors/ adjunct professors at SPPU on the basis of their educational qualifications, post-PhD and teaching experiences. The University Grants Commission (UGC) (minimum standards and procedure for award of MPhil/ PhD degrees) Regulations, 2016 adopted by the SPPU will be followed by both institutions.
