Pune: The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), along with Cipla Foundation, will build a state-of-the-art modern chemistry research and innovation laboratory for undergraduate students at IISER campus in Pune.
Dr YK Hamied, Non-Executive Chairman of Cipla Ltd, MK Hamied, Non-executive Vice Chairman of Cipla Ltd and Rumana Hamied, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cipla Foundation, along with KN Ganesh, Director of IISER, Pune, and Dr AA Natu, Programme Coordinator of IISER, Pune, were present when the announcement was made.
Speaking on the occasion, YK Hamied stressed on the need for creating world-class infrastructure, which would encourage enquiry and innovation. Thus, it would help in creating scientists of tomorrow. He said, “If we focus on technology for the present, we will soon be obsolete. We need to focus on research and build technology for the future.”
The proposed 30,000 sq ft laboratory will be at par with the most advanced facilities in the world and enable virtual and interactive simulations to visualise chemistry concepts and phenomena. It will provide facilities for scale-up experiments, advanced laboratories to conduct smaller research projects and training for industrial research. It will also enable much needed industry-academia partnerships and training of teachers and students to ensure learning is closely connected with real-life application through its outreach programme.
Rumana Hamied said, “The Cipla Foundation believes that access to quality education is a catalyst for building productive lives. This IISER-Cipla Foundation partnership will give students and teachers opportunities for inventiveness, exploration and discovery.”
Ganesh said, “Science has the responsibility of building sustainable solutions to address the needs of the community. With this infrastructure support, IISER aims to provide global education standards in India and nurture specialists in the country.”
