Hotels to serve half glass water to cut the wastage

Pune: For everyone else in the country, serving half a glass of water to a guest may seem like a rude gesture. But not for Puneites! 

In a bid to save water this year, too, hotels and restaurants in Pune will now serve a half glass of water to customers. Pune Restaurant and Hoteliers’ Association (PRAHA) have kicked off the #GlassHalfFull campaign in December this year, instead of the usual practice of following it in summers since the last couple of years.
 
“The customers will be served more water if they request for it. Generally, when a water is served, many customers drink either half or a little more than that, remaining (water) is left. Hence, we want to indulge in a practice where only the required amount is served and consumed,” said Ganesh Shetty, President of the association.

Shetty had initially experimented the campaign in his hotel Kalinga Veg located at Nal Stop, where he observed that at least 800 litres of water is saved daily if only half a glass of water is served to customers.

He said many more hotels will join the campaign now. Kishor Sarpotdar of Poona Guest House and general secretary of PRAHA said that from last month, this practice has been appreciated by many customers. 

Kitchen wastage
Few hoteliers have stated that only this initiative will not be enough to control the water wastage, as most restaurants and hotels keep a bottle or jug of water filled on the table.
 
“The amount of water wasted in the kitchen is more than what is served outside. Many hotels and restaurants don’t have dishwashing machines which reduces the use of water or instruct their utility personnel to use less water while washing utensils,” said Haji Zakir Shaikh, partner of Arthur’s Theme, Baner.

“Serving less water to customers won’t really serve the purpose if other wastages aren’t taken care of,” Shaikh added. Shashindara Shetty, co-owner of Roopali, however, said saving water in kitchen becomes difficult as “we need for cleaning which is unavoidable. But  the water left after cleaning vegetables is reused to clean the floor at night.”

On an average around 200 litres of water is wasted per customer.

How can you stop this?

  • Take and ask for only as much as you need
  • Avoid wastage - finish your glasses
  • If you have bought a bottle, carry with you if there is water left in it.

By doing this, you save

  • Enough for a person’s weekly drinking needs.
  • Enough for washing clothes for a year.
  • Enough to support a village for 1.5 months on your own.

Roopali at forefront
Roopali restaurant on FC Road, popular among youngsters and senior citizens alike, has been saving the massive quantity of water daily this way for the past one year. 

“Daily around 1,500 customers visit our restaurant and we manage to save at least 150-200 litres of water,” Shashindara Shetty, co-owner of Roopali, said.
