Mumbai High Court, on Monday, ordered the State government to merge 34 fringe villages into PMC limits within three weeks.

PUNE: Mumbai High Court, on Monday, ordered the State government to merge 34 fringe villages into PMC limits within three weeks.

Following urbanisation in these fringe villages, the Congress-NCP government had issued a notification in 2012 to include these 34 villages in the PMC limits and completed the procedure of inviting suggestions and objections. However, when the BJP government took over in the State, it kept the decision regarding inclusion of these villages on hold.

Fed up with the State government not taking a decision, the Haveli Taluka Action Committee approached the HC, which had already asked the government to take a decision by June 12. Meanwhile, the State Election Commission declared panchayat elections in 19 of these villages but 15 villages boycotted the polls. Despite this, the government did not follow the HC order and hence the court ordered the government to merge the villages withing three weeks.
