GRP nabbed person offering food with sedatives

Pune: The Government Railway Police (GRP) have nabbed a thief who used to steal belongings of travellers in passenger trains passing from Pune by offering them dates laced with sedatives. The man reportedly confessed to having committed several such crimes in Pune-Nizamabad Passenger as well as Pune-Manmad Passenger.

On Saturday afternoon, he was nabbed by a joint team of GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF), after getting a tip-off.

The man reportedly confessed to having committed several such crimes in Pune-Nizamabad Passenger as well as Pune-Manmad Passenger.

On Saturday afternoon, he was nabbed by a joint team of GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF), after getting a tip-off.

The arrested man has been identified as Arun Shivchandra Jha (52) who stayed on the Uruli railway station and hails from Bihar. 
“We were told that this man steals belongings of passengers approaching them as a well meaning co-traveller and offering them dates which were laced with sedatives. Once they go to sleep, he used to flee with their belongings,” said Sanjay Satav, Police Inspector, Pune railway station’s GRP unit.

Satav said that they have also managed to seize sedative laced dates as well as Rs 11,000 which he had recently stolen from the passengers using the modus operandi.

“He’s a history-sheeter and was arrested in 2005 for committing similar crimes,” said Satav.
