Govt gears up for Jan 1 Koregaon-Bhima event

Pune: The district administration and Pune rural police have listed several dos and don’ts to avoid any disturbance in Koregaon-Bhima on January 1, the remembrance day of Battle of Koregaon of 1818.

Superintendent of Police Pune Rural Sandip Patil said locals should immediately alert the police if they sense some untoward incident happening. He said that government officials will be carrying their identity cards along with them on the day.“Police officials are alert and are keeping tabs on messages related to the event on social media. If miscreants are trying to spread rumours or fake messages, they will be dealt with seriously by the law. All stakeholders should contribute to the success of the event and co-operate with each other,” added Patil.

District Collector Naval Kishore Ram said the authorities are taking adequate measures to maintain law and order on the day.

“All the authorities need to do is religiously handle their individual responsibilities on the day. The authorities are working on providing parking, electricity, water and other necessary supplies,” he said.

“Similarly, ambulances, fire fighters and police will be deployed in heavy numbers on the day,” added Ram.

The officials visited Perne Phata and nearby areas on Saturday to plan the event in advance. They held a meeting with the locals and asked them to cooperate on the day.

Two groups clashed with each other in the adjoining areas of Koregaon-Bhima, Sanaswadi, Kondhapuri and Shikrapur on January 1 this year. One person was killed, while several others were injured, including a few police officials.
