Goon arrested for extortion bid

Pune: Notorious goon Nilesh Ghaywal was arrested and 15 of his accomplices booked for allegedly trying to extort money from a BJP member of the Pune Cantonment Board.

Ghaywal was released from jail in February this year after remaining behind bars for about six years.

According to the police, the PCB member lent Rs 5 lakh to a businessman in Koregaon Park. Ghaywal threatened the PCB member and asked him not to ask for the return of the money and demanded Rs 1 lakh per month as protection money.

Earlier, on Sunday midnight, Ghaywal and his accomplices had gone to a hotel on Dhole Patil Road looking for the PCB member. The goons were told he was not there and so they beat up the staff and vandalised the furniture.

The hotel staff lodged an FIR with the Koregaon Park police station on Wednesday. On the same day, the PCB member lodged a complaint of extortion with the Lashkar police station.

After the FIRs, a team led by Police Inspector Raghunath Jadhav and API Sunil Gavli from Crime Branch's Anti-Extortion Cell arrested Ghaywal and his aide Sagar Jogawade (34). Ghaywal has nine serious crimes registered against him, including three murders and cases of attempted murder and extortion.

Police officials said Ghaywal was earlier associated with Gajanan Marne gang, but later they parted ways over a financial dispute. Both the gangs are engaged in a tussle for supremacy in Kothrud. They have killed members of each other's gang over the last several years.
