Giripremi to train next gen mountaineers

Pune: With a dedicated service of mountaineering for over two decades, city-based mountaineering organisation Giripremi is preparing the next generation of mountaineers. Recently, Guardian Giripremi Institute of Mountaineering (GGIM) organised the appreciation ceremony of about 200 students who have successfully completed ‘Avhan-Nirmaan-Udaan’ course 2016-17.

Pune: With a dedicated service of mountaineering for over two decades, city-based mountaineering organisation Giripremi is preparing the next generation of mountaineers. Recently, Guardian Giripremi Institute of Mountaineering (GGIM) organised the appreciation ceremony of about 200 students who have successfully completed ‘Avhan-Nirmaan-Udaan’ course 2016-17.

Dr Shreekant Kelkar, Director, National Institute of Ophthalmology, was the chief guest for the programme. He was enthusiastic about attending the programme and felt proud after knowing the steady growth of mountaineering in Pune. 

“I am proud that a mountaineering training programme for teenagers is being organised in Pune. Handing over the baton to the next generation is a rare phenomenon. However, beating all odds, GGIM is doing it successfully and I must congratulate  them,” he said.

Every year, 250 students participate in the programme. The institute organises special adventure programmes for students of age 10 to 16 for the last 15 years. The programme runs throughout the year and once every month, students visit hills for mountaineering. Along with technicalities of mountaineering, map reading, first aid, environment conservation, cooking and camping are taught in the sessions. 

The book ‘Chadhai-Utarai Sahyadritil Ghatvatanchi’, penned by Founder- President of Giripremi, Anand Palande was also unveiled. The appreciation ceremony and flag-off programme were attended by Jagdish Kadam, Director Janata Sahakari Bank, Vivek Gupta, Director Vidya Valley School, Nalini Sengupta, Principal Vidya Valley School, Ushprabha Page, Founder Giripremi, Anand Palande, Founder- Director Giripremi, Umesh Zipre, leader of Giripremi and several members and well wishers of Giripremi. Everest Summiteer Bhushan Harshe compered the  session.

Adventure camps
† At the end of the course, students visit Manali-based Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports for an adventure camp. The students’ representatives also shared their experience with the audience. Giripremi had also organised Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Island Peak and Mera Peak treks in April- May 2017.
