Giripremi Institute to undertake eco-expedition to Mt Kanchenjunga

Pune: City-based Giripremi Institute of Mountaineering will hold the biggest civilian expedition from India on one of the toughest mountains of the world, i.e, at Mount Kanchenjunga, an eco-expedition ‘Kangchenjunga Eco Expedition 2019’ has appealed for financial help and support for the expedition. The budget for the project is Rs 2.25 crore.
 
After successful expeditions of six 8,000er peaks, Giripremi is now ready to take on the seventh challenge on world’s third highest peak and India’s highest peak- Mt Kangchenjunga. The expedition will take place in April-May 2019. 

The expedition will be the biggest civilian expedition from India on one of the toughest mountains of the world. During a press conference, Umesh Zirpe, veteran mountaineer and expedition leader, said, “Since Kangchenjunga is one of the toughest peaks to climb and it will be not just a usual expedition but an eco-expedition, so the equipment, clothes and other accessories specially made to counter high altitude adverse conditions cost in lacs per person. And all these processes are tedious and demand great expertise along with huge funds.
 
Hence, we have taken the conference to appeal for funds. Till now we have collected around Rs 60 lakh when the total budget is Rs 2.25 crore. While the funds needed for the eco-project is Rs 5 lakh which includes in the total funding.”

“We have finalised 10 members who are climbers and will be also working for the eco-project. Including the climbers, there are a total of 100 people who will participate in the expedition, but they will be dedicated for the eco-project. It will consist of renowned scientists, environmentalists, researchers who will work towards environmental conservation during the expedition and eight students from the second year of Geography Department of the Savitribai Phule Pune University,” Zirpe added

The equipment needed for the expedition is oxygen cylinder which is available for Rs 75,000, sherpa support, royalty to Nepal government, other permits and insurance which increase the cost. Giripremi has urged adventure lovers to help and support the expedition.
