Pune: Pune hosts one of the best Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in India where not only various themes on decorations in Ganpati pandals matters but Puneites also visit the Ganpati pandals to watch live shows which are demonstrated on trending social topics or issues.

The tradition of holding live shows which are also known as ‘jeevant dekhava’ by Ganpati mandals dates back several years. Then the Ganpati mandals used to organise live shows on topics showcasing history of Pune and India. Even now, the mandals demonstrate the history of Pune, Kargil war and so on.

Rushikesh Raut, Executive President of Azad Hind Mitra Mandal, of Jangli Maharaj (JM) Road who have completed 77 years of Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal are holding live shows from last six years. Every year they focus on showing the history of the city or of the country. Rushikesh Raut, Executive President of Azad Hind Mitra Mandal, said, “This year we focused on showing Kargil war in our pandal. This will inspire the youths to develop the spirit of fighting for one’s own rights and for India. Last year the theme was on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje - his life journey.”

Similarly, Vinayak Mitra Mandal of Narayan Peth every year demonstrates live shows on Shivaji Maharaj and depiction of his life. Swapnil More, President of Vinayak Mitra Mandal, said, “Our pandal has completed 18 years of Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal and 12 years of demonstrating live shows. From the time we started organising live shows. We are only demonstrating live shows on Shivaji Maharaj and depiction of his life. This year as well the theme of the live show is ‘Gad aala pan sinh gela’ which depicts the war of Sinhagad fort.”

Apart from showcasing the history, the other pandals of the city are focusing on social causes. Nikhil Bhargude, Treasurer of Nav Chaitanya Mandal, Deccan, said, “The theme of this year’s live show is on Sant Gora Kumbhar who was a Hindu saint associated with the Bhakti movement and the Warkari sect of Maharashtra. Through the show, we want to give the message on doing the right thing without keeping any expectation and trusting the divine power.”

“We have completed 96 years as a Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal and from last five years, we are holding live shows. Last year as well we did a live show on female foeticide,” Bhargude added.

Another Ganpati mandal is holding live show for the first time and it is on disadvantages of extensive use of mobile phone. Simon Carvalo, President of Shivraj Tarun Mandal, said, “From this year onwards we will be doing live shows and the theme is disadvantages of extensive use of mobile phone. Nowadays as we can see youngsters are more interested in the mobile phone rather than doing something productive. Even while driving or riding they use mobile phones and risk their lives. Taking this as a sensitive issue, as today’s youngsters are the next generation heroes we need to keep them safe and teach them the right path.”
