Fresh blow to agitating KIoSS students

Pune: Students of Karve Institute of Social Service (KIoSS) received another setback after being evicted from the hostel as the college administration locked the lobby where the students were camping.

When the students returned from their college after their lectures on Thursday, they found that the lobby was locked. These students had camped there after being removed from the hostel on August 5.

“All our belongings; bags, documents, clothes etc. are locked inside the lobby. We had written a request letter to the management to kindly unlock the lobby or at least allow us to take our belongings, but they haven’t reverted. Also, the college staff had taken a half day leave and they were not available till evening,” said a student. While the students were already struggling with homelessness, the rains made it worse.

“All of us had somehow managed to build a tent and sleep outside in the open and it rained heavily on Thursday night. Everyone got drenched in the rain because the tents started leaking. We wore the same clothes on the next day,” said another student.

The tough stance of the college management has pushed the students against the wall. High drama on the protest has prevailed as hundreds of alumni have come forward in the support of these students. The students had also received a court notice issued by the college against 17 students including boys and girls participating in the agitation. The second hearing has been scheduled on Monday.
