Four killed in road mishap near new Katraj tunnel

Pune: Four persons including three members of a family were killed when their speeding car rammed into a truck on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway near new Katraj tunnel in the wee hours of Monday. 

The deceased persons have been identified as Dr Yashwant Pandurang Mane (47), his wife Sharada (40) and their son Hrishikesh Mane (20), all residents of Chunabhatti in Mumbai and their relative Ramchandra Krushna Surve (71). Hrishikesh was driving the car, the police said. According to the police, Mane family hails from Mhaswad village in Maan taluka of Satara district.

Dr Mane’s daughter is a student of a medical college in Satara district. The family had left their home in Mumbai on Sunday for dropping her to the college. After that, they visited their native place and then at late night left for Mumbai. The accident took place around 4 am. The police suspect that Hrishikesh lost control over the wheels and rammed the truck from behind in Jambhulwadi area. The impact was such that all four persons died on the spot. 

Police officials from Bharati Vidyapeeth police station visited the spot. 

Bodies of the victims were taken to Sassoon Hospital and were handed over to the family after post-mortem. Based on complaint from constable Netaji Kantagale, an FIR has been registered against Hrishikesh for offences under sections 279 (rash driving), 304a (causing death due to negligence), 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC, and section 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicle Act.
