Foundation demands reconstitution of panel awarding prize to tamasha artistes

PUNE: Lokshahir Gafurbhai Punekar Social Foundation is demanding reconstitution of selection committee of Vithabai Narayangaonkar Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar given by the State  Government to tamasha artistes. This was stated at a press conference held recently at Patrakar Bhavan.

Amar Punekar, President and Co-founder Lokshahir Gafurbhai Punekar Social Foundation said, “For last two years, this award is given to people who are not related or have not contributed much to tamasha.”

Even in the selection commitee of seven people, there are only two who are related to tamasha and others are not. We want the commitee to be reconstituted and veteran members from tamasha field should be part of it,” Punekar added.

“A cash prize of Rs five lakh is given to the recipient of Vithabai Narayangaonkar Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar. We demand that instead of giving it to one person, it  should be given to five artistes as this is only way that will provide justice to veteran tamasha artistes,” he said.

Other demands include free medical care to artistes, tamasha artistes should be exempted from toll tax and there should be a proper affordable housing scheme for senior tamasha artistes.
