Forest dept plants 1 lakh saplings in Pune district

Over 1,000 saplings of custard apple were planted in a tree plantation drive at Yerwada central prison on Sunday.

Pune: Over 1 lakh saplings were planted by the State Forest Department in 8 different places in Pune district on Sunday. In the month-long State-wide mega tree plantation drive, which kick-started on July 1, the Pune Forest Department has set a target of planting as many as 55.91 lakh saplings across the district. 

Pune Forest Department officials said that 46 lakh pits are already in place and they will soon start plantation of saplings to achieve the target of 55.91 lakh sapling plantation. 

Currently, there are 80 lakh saplings in 41 nurseries, which the Forest Department will be planting at 16 different locations including Mulshi, Maval, Haveli, Ambegaon, Junnar, Purandar, Khed, Daund, Baramati, Indapur, Velha, Vadgaon, Shirur and Bhor. 

In another tree plantation drive at Yerwada Central Prison, over 1,000 saplings of custard apple were planted in the prison premises. Superintendent of Yerwada Prison (acting) Pradeep Jagtap said that over 70 prisoners and officials from prison and agriculture department were present during the plantation drive. Prison officer Hemant Patil said that they have kept a target of planting 8,500 saplings in the month of July. “7,500 pits are ready for the plantation drive,” added Patil. 

To fight global warming, climate change issues and to save the environment, the State government has decided to plant trees on a large scale. 

The government has set a target of planting 50 crore saplings in three years from 2017-2019. While this year the government has kept a target of 13 crore plantation, in the next year, the government is 
targeting 33 crore.
