Foreign cigarettes worth Rs 4.6 lakh seized by police

Pune: Foreign made cigarettes worth Rs 4.6 lakh (1,421 packets) have been seized from two shops in Kondhwa, as they were being sold without requisite permissions and also because the packets did not have warning signs as stipulated by the Indian government. 

The cigarettes brands included Win, Black, Gudang Garam, Paris, etc.

The cigarettes brands included Win, Black, Gudang Garam, Paris, etc.

Based on a complaint by Akhilesh Pande of NGO Vcare Foundation, Mumbai, an FIR in this regard has been registered with Kondhwa police station. Police seized 673 cigarette packets worth Rs 2.12 lakh from SK Trading, opposite Sheetal petrol pump, Kondhwa, and 748 packets worth Rs 2.46 lakh from Prayag Traders, Brahma Estate, Kondhwa. 

A case has been registered against SK Trading owner Shakir Abdul Jayesh Shaikh (31) and Prayag Traders’ owner Shivkumar Prayag Dwivedi (46) for offences under relevant sections of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act.
