Pune: The Pune Customs officers at the airport intercepted a passenger coming from Abu Dhabi by Jet Airways for illegally carrying gold worth Rs 97.07 lakh on Wednesday.
He was identified as Saifula Nasar Dudgave, a resident of Kolhapur. The officials recovered gold weighing 4.371 kg of 18K (Karat) valued Rs 97,07,818 concealed in one sewing machine and an iron, which were kept in a pink trolley bag.
Bharat Nawale, Deputy Commissioner, Customs, said, “Saifula arrived on Wednesday at the airport by Jet Airways flight number 9W 513 from Abu Dhabi at 4.25 am. He attempted to clear himself through the 'green channel'. However, the officer noticed the suspicious movement of Saifula at the arrival hall of the airport. A thorough examination of his check-in baggage recovered metallic objects which were deeply concealed in one sewing machine and in a cloth in an iron.”
The metallic object was verified by the government valuer as gold weighing 4.371 kg of 18K. Saifula attempted to smuggle the gold to avoid paying customs duty.
According to an officer, “Passing through a green channel means a person is carrying dutiable goods within the prescribed free allowance and has no other goods to declare. The passengers can simply walk through the green channel with their baggage on the basis of their oral declaration or declaration on their disembarkation card.”
Recent incidents of gold recovery at the airport
- December 11, 2017: Gold worth Rs 17.87 lakh was recovered from a passenger, who came from Dubai by Spice Jet. The gold was hidden in the form of 288 press buttons attached to 48 baby diapers.
- November 11, 2017: Gold weighed 933.11 gm worth Rs 29.01 lakh was seized which was kept beneath the seat in the life jacket in a Spice Jet flight from Dubai.
- September 10, 2017: Raw gold recovered from Air India flier weighed 3159.55 gram worth Rs 1 crore.
- August 18. 2017: Raw gold recovered weighing 4.68 kg worth Rs 1.38 crore from four passengers including women.
