First live kidney transplant performed at SGH

PUNE: Recently, a 63-year-old father from Beed district helped give a new lease of life to his 35-year-old son who was suffering from kidney-related issues. The father donated his kidney to his son at the Sassoon General Hospital (SGH). This kidney transplant was the first such live transplant which took place at SGH.

“The patient’s father, Devidas Gundule, a farmer, decided to give his kidney to save his son. SGH has carried out three cases of kidney transplants earlier in which the donors were brain dead. This was the first kidney transplant involving a live donor at the hospital,” said SGH officials.

Dean of BJ Medical College and SGH, Dr Ajay Chandanwale said the kidney transplant is a challenging surgery.

“This surgery proves that the quality of treatment given at SGH has improved in past few years and is becoming more up-to-date. SGH, a tertiary care hospital caters to the entire Pune district and those seeking complicated treatment from nearby districts as well,” said Dr Chandanwale.
