Execution of gang-rape, murder convicts to be held on June 24

PUNE: The Principal District and Sessions Judge, Pune, has issued warrants for the execution of Purushottam Borate (36) and Pradeep Kokade (33), who have been convicted of the rape and murder of a BPO employee in Pune in 2007. They are lodged at Yerwada Central Jail and will be executed on June 24. Their death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court on May 8, 2015. The convicts had filed mercy petitions, which were rejected by the President of India two years ago. 

The victim (22), originally from Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) who worked at a Wipro BPO (then Spectramind), had resigned and it was her last day at the company on November 1, 2007, when she was picked up by the company cab driver Borate and his friend Kokade around 10 pm from her home for a night shift. 

The incident came to light when she did not return home the next morning. Her body was found on the morning of November 2, 2007, at Gahunje along the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. 

Borate and Kokade were later arrested.

In March 2012, the Pune Sessions Court sentenced them to death. The sentence was upheld by the Bombay High Court in September 2012 and by the Supreme Court in May 2015.
