Engineer ordered to cough up Rs 30K monthly maintenance

Pune: An engineer who had abandoned his wife and three children has been ordered by the Pune Family Court to pay Rs 30,000 monthly as maintenance. He earns about Rs 2 lakh per month.

The engineer’s wife was preparing for the civil services exam when the couple got married in 1997. She cleared the preliminary exams. But after marriage, she was not allowed to pursue her career. As she was not allowed to go out, she started a beauty parlour at home.

The man then started a business with his brother. Later, he had an affair with another woman and started neglecting his wife. Over the years, the couple had three children, but he was not looking after them properly. Due to continuous mental torture, the wife was forced to leave the house.

She lodged a complaint with the women grievances redressal cell at the Pune Police Commissioner’s office. Later, she filed a case of domestic violence and sought maintenance. The man refuted her allegations saying there was no harassment and he had supported her business. He accused her of separating children from him. After hearing both sides, the court recently ordered the man to pay Rs 30,000 per month to her for various expenditures.
