Encroachment near Pimpri railway station removed

Pimpri: Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Friday removed a large number of illegal structures near Pimpri railway station, paving the way for increasing the length of the two railway platforms.

The removed encroachments included huts, tin sheds and some fish shops.

The Railway administration has undertaken work of increasing the length of both the platforms at Pimpri railway station. A compound wall is also being constructed at the station area. There are also plans to construct two parallel roads from Pimpri to Chinchwad along the railway tracks. Work in this regard has already been started at some places. The illegal structures under the Indira Gandhi flyover near the Pimpri station were removed as a part of these projects.

A similar drive against illegal structures near Pimpri station last month had witnessed strong protests from the affected people. The action on Friday however did not meet resistance as a large number of police personnel were posted at the site. The roads leading to the sites were also closed for traffic.
Rajendra Rane, PCMC Encroachment Department’s engineer, said that the civic body had issued notices to the affected persons a fortnight back.
