In the civic elections held in Pimpri-Chinchwad in February 2017, the NCP had to face a landslide defeat after which former Mayor Yogesh Behl was appointed as Leader of Opposition.

However, a gradual campaign took shape to promote local residents who were projected as ‘son of soil’. After Behl’s resignation as Leader of Opposition the post was given to Sane, who was vocal about this discrimination in the party.

Following the change of guard in the opposition, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is also likely to replace key posts of Leader of House, Mayor and Deputy Mayor. BJP corporator Shital Shinde and Rahul Jadhav are likely to be chosen for these posts, according to sources.
