Pune: A magistrate’s court sentenced two men to three years rigorous imprisonment for cheating youths under the pretext of helping them get jobs in Railways.

Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Vishakha Patil also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on convicts Anil Namdev Patil (56) and Namdev Dattatray Patil (83), both residents of Gokhalenagar. Nilesh Dhamal had lodged an FIR against them with the Chatuhshrungi police in June 2007.

According to the police, Dhamal was looking for a job when he came in contact with the convicts in January 2004. They claimed to have good contacts in the Railways and said they had helped many youths get jobs there. Dhamal, his friends and a few relatives paid Rs 1 lakh each for the job. However, the convicts neither got them a job, nor returned the money. In 2006, the convicts had given a cheque of Rs 15 lakh to the victims as refund, but it was dishonoured.
