Dumper kills two pedestrians, injures one in Chandni Chowk
The police said that the dumper was loaded with sand and the driver could not manage the descend from Chandni Chowk towards Kothrud which led to the accident. A heavy traffic jam was reported for an hour after the accident.
Pune: Two persons including a minor girl were killed and one person was injured after the trio were hit by a descending fully loaded dumper in Chandni Chowk on Friday morning. The deceased have been identified as Puja Narayan Chavan (20) and Nikita Navle (10) while the injured as Sheetal Raju Rathod (27).
According to the complaint filed by witness Siddharth Rane (33), he was waiting near Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) near Chandni Chowk when the incident took place. As per Rane’s complaint, he had gone for a business meet and his friend Swapnil Mazde was parking his car near CCD when a speeding dumper hit the three persons. The Kothrud police said that Puja, Nikita and Sheetal were crossing the road when the dumper driver lost control and hit the girls. While Puja was thrown in the air and then was hit by an electric pole, Nikita and Sheetal were stuck in the dumper and were dragged for some metres.
“Sheetal and Nikita were rushed to a hospital and Puja had succumbed to her injuries,” the police said.
Rane told police that the driver of the dumper also hit Mazde’s car which was damaged. The dumper driver stopped and was then nabbed by Mazde and handed over to Kothrud police. Kothrud police arrested the dumper driver, Teju Bhiju Rathod (34) from Lonikand.
Sheetal’s cousin Vijay Rathod said Puja and Sheetal stayed in Warje and were working in Bajaj company’s BPO unit in Lohiya Jain IT Park. “The duo would take an autorickshaw from Warje and would get down at Chandni Chowk. They were crossing the road to go to their office when they were hit by the dumper,” added Rathod, who said Sheetal was admitted at Sahyadri Hospital and has lost her left leg.
Rathod said that Sheetal was under treatment in the ICU and was in a critical condition. The police said that Nikita was on her way to school near Kothrud when the incident took place.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ashok Morale said that Chandni Chowk has always remained to be a hot spot for accidents. “A new safety plan of Chandni Chowk has been submitted to the Pune Municipal Corporation by the traffic department,” added Morale.
Senior Police Inspector Raghunath Phuge of Kothrud police station is investigating the case.
