Death toll in Karla Phata mishap goes up to nine

PUNE: The death toll in the Karla accident has increased to nine after Rohit Kad (16) succumbed to his injuries. Earlier on Monday, Pratik Balaji Sarode (18) had also succumbed. 

Seven persons including four of a family were killed on the spot after a Swift car jumped divider and collided head-on with a Santro coming from opposite direction near Karla Phata on Sunday afternoon on the old Mumbai-Pune Highway.

The police said that the deceased persons (travelling in Swift) were Sanjeev Mohan Singh Kushwah (17), Krishna Ramesh Shirsat (22), and Nikhil Balaji Sarode (20), all residents of Rahatani. The deceased persons (travelling in Santro) were Rajeev Jagannath Bahirat (52), Sonali Rajeev Bahirat (46), Jahnvi Rajeev Bahirat (20), Jagannath Chandrasen Bahirat (83), all residents of Kalashankar Nagar, B T Kawde road, in Mundhwa.

The injured Akash Madne (17) is undergoing treatment. He is the only survivor.  According to police and friends of the deceased youths, Krishna was driving the car in which six friends were going to Lonavla for a trip. Krishna lost balance over the wheels and the car jumped the divider before colliding with the Santro.
