Pune: The customs officials at Pune airport recovered six gold biscuits from the toilet of the Spice Jet SG 52, which arrived from Dubai on Saturday. The smuggled gold, weighing 699.90 grams and valued at Rs 21.90 lakh, was kept in the Oxygen Mask Panel of the rear lavatory.
Mahesh Patil, Deputy Commissioner, Customs at Pune Airport, said, “During the rummaging of the international flight, which arrived from Dubai, the air customs officers found that the gold biscuits were concealed in the oxygen mask panel of the rear lavatory of the flight. It was wrapped in a black adhesive tape and again wrapped in a yellow coloured cloth to cleverly conceal it in the lavatory of the aircraft.”
The smuggled gold was seized by the Customs officers under reasonable belief that the same was attempted to be smuggled in India and hence liable for confiscation. This is a new modus operandi used by smugglers to conceal the gold, said the officer.
