PUNE: A couple was booked for assaulting a pet female Labrador. The incident was witnessed by neighbours in the housing society on Wednesday, who informed the police.

The neighbours had already suspected the couple before the incident, as they frequently heard the noise of the pet barking and howling. On Wednesday, Supriya Phata, the first person to witness the incident and a neighbour, said, “At first, I saw the boy beating the dog in a room and, when I stopped him, he closed the door and took the dog in the balcony and again started beating him. Meanwhile, I collected all other residents of the society and called the police. When the people gathered near the house and forcefully made the couple open the door, he stopped beating the dog. The pet was beaten while being chained in the balcony and its mouth was tied with a tape to stop its howling. The boy was drunk when he was beating the pet, who has got several internal injuries and swelling in her leg.”

She added, “After the dog was rescued, we demanded her custody. Presently, we have got physical custody of the dog but soon we will start legal proceedings. Also, the couple will be charged a penalty along with an agreement that they cannot keep any kind of pet in the future. Moreover, we have approached the higher authority to take action against the girl tenant as the incident happened in front of her. The boy was her partner and doesn’t belong in the society.”

Diksha Thakkar, an animal activist who was also present and sought custody of the dog, said, “We sent the dog to a vet for treatment and currently she is staying with a foster family. After the legal procedure for her custody is completed, we will look for her adoption in a better family.”
