Cops nab rape accused who had escaped from Sassoon Hospital

After his escape, another case was registered against him with Bund Garden police station.

Pune: Officials of Crime Branch Unit 3 nabbed a 21-year-old rape accused within hours after he escaped from the police custody at Sassoon Hospital on Sunday morning. He was admitted there for two days after being referred from the Yerwada Central Jail.

Acting on a tip-off received by Head Constable Anil Ghadge, a police team nabbed him in Urulikanchan on Sunday night. The accused, Akshay Lonare, is an undertrial prisoner for the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl. The FIR was registered in May 2015 at Kondhwa police station.

After his escape, another case was registered against him with Bund Garden police station. According to police, he was brought to the hospital on Friday and admitted in ward 26, which is meant for the patients with mental illness. He escaped around 8.30 am.
