Cops nab employee who fled with cash

Pune: Sleuths from the Detection Branch of Dattawadi police station nabbed the employee of a cash-collecting firm who had fled with Rs 34 lakh, which he was supposed to deposit in a bank, within 36 hours of the incident. The police recovered about Rs 32 lakh cash.

The arrested accused was identified as Dinesh Sopan Kale (26), a resident of Karmala in Solapur. He is Std XII pass with DEd and was working with Checkmate Services Private Limited for the last one month. The firm’s Director Prakash Belsare,  lodged a complaint at Dattawadi police station.  

According to police, Checkmate collects cash from its client companies in the city. Its employees carry the cash to the bank and deposit it in respective accounts. Checkmate employed Kale to steer the cash collection van. On Monday, he was on van duty on Sinhagad Road area. After collecting cash for the day, Kale was supposed to deposit Rs 34,00,101 in Axis Bank’s Sinhagad Road branch.

DCP (Zone II) Dr Pravin Mundhe said, “The van dropped Kale outside the bank at 12.30 pm. He was given bags of cash to deposit. He entered the bank but didn’t deposit the cash. He waited for the van to leave for another duty. He exited the bank and fled with the cash instead of depositing it.”

“The bank’s CCTV footage captured Kale’s movements. Our teams visited his house at his native place but we we did not find him there. Investigations revealed that he was staying in Katraj where his relatives lived. While he was trying to flee, our team nabbed him at Laxminarayan Chowk on Wednesday at 4 pm. We have recovered Rs 31.89 lakh from his possession,” said Senior Police Inspector Anil Patil, in-charge of Dattawadi police station.
