Contractor held in Warje murder case

Pune: The police have arrested a man in the murder case of Kavita Rathod, a labourer whose partially burnt body was found last Monday at Warje. The man was arrested by the police from the village at the border of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Sunday.

The accused was identified as Gopal Rathod, 30, a native of Yawatmal, who allegedly murdered the victim and then burnt her body in order to conceal the identity. After killing the woman the accused threw her body in a concrete sewage water pipeline near the gate of RM Dhariwal College in Warje.

Rathod, a small-time contractor, was arrested from the house of his brother in the Naxal-affected region at the border of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Bajirao Mole, Police Inspector, Warje-Malwadi police station, said “The accused went absconding after committing the crime and was hiding at the place of his brother. He was in an illegitimate relationship with the victim and used to provide her menial jobs as a contractor. He has admitted his crime."

The incident came to light when a missing complaint was filed by the husband of the 32-year-old victim.

The police have booked the accused under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
