Consumer forum orders MSEDCL to pay Rs. 2.30 L to Fursungi farmer

Pune: The District Consumer Forum has ordered the government-run Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Limited (MSEDCL) to pay compensation of Rs 2.30 lakh to a farmer from Fursungi who had lost sugarcane and irrigation pipes due to a snapped high tension wire, which caused fire in his farm.

Pandit Subhanrao Shitole of Fursungi had moved the forum in this regard in November last year. On January 16, 2016, the wire had snapped causing damages to the sugarcane and pipes in his farms in Fursungi. He had lodged a complaint in this regard with Hadapsar police station also.

Three days later, he applied for compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the MSEDCL but it was rejected on the ground that it was an accidental fire. Thereafter, he moved the consumer forum demanding compensation of Rs 10.6 lakh from MSEDCL.

Shitole submitted that police had conducted spot panchnama and had found that sugarcane was destroyed on the one-acre farm. He also submitted reports of the engineer and inspector of MSEDCL, which was submitted to the higher authorities, wherein it is mentioned that damages occurred due to the high tension wire.

The MSEDCL officials did not appear before the forum even after getting notices.

Therefore, the forum issued an ex-parte order against the company and directed it to pay Rs two lakh with six per cent interest since January 2016. The company was also ordered to pay Rs 30,000 for mental harassment and legal cost.
