Congressman held for abetment of suicide

Pune: A prominent member of Pune city Congress, Vinay Dhere, was arrested for having an illicit relationship with a woman and abetting her husband’s suicide. The accused was arrested by the Khadak police on Sunday evening.

According to Khadak police, the accused was having an affair with the victim’s wife since 2012, because of which the victim ended his life. The police were informed that the victim tried to end his life on the morning of October 11 by consuming poison at his home. However, he survived and was admitted to a private hospital.

Rajendra Mikashi, Police Inspector from Khadak police station, said, “The woman’s husband said he was fed up with the illicit relationship. Fortunately, his attempt failed and he was in hospital for a few days. He approached us on Sunday, after which we arrested the accused and, on Monday, we arrested the wife of the complainant.”

The police have booked Dhere under section 306 (Abetment of suicide) and 511 (Punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of Indian  Penal Code. He was produced in court on Monday and has been remanded in seven days’ police custody.
