Pune: Two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporators have demanded Rs 5 lakh compensation for family of Praful Wankhede, who recently died in Taljai swimming pool due to contractor’s negligence. Dhiraj Ghate and Raja Barate have submitted a proposal to the Standing Committee.

As per the proposal, Praful Wankhede’s family is living in Dattawadi. Praful’s father died a few years ago. His mother works as a maid and his younger brother is an electrician. He died after drowning in the swimming pool which is Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) property. The swimming pool was given to the contractor to operate. Hence, the corporation has to pay Rs 5 lakh to Wankhede’s family, the proposal stated.

Last Sunday, Wankhede went for a swim in the Taljai swimming pool. He stepped into the pool where the depth was three feet, but accidentally slipped and went to the deeper part of the pool which was six feet deep. He drowned and died. There are more than 200 swimming pools in the city, of which 25 are owned by the civic body. Private pools include pools located in housing societies, hotels, educational institutes, sports complex and commercially run pools.
